The George Washington University Inn stands amid the 19th-century brownstones of the tree-lined Foggy Bottom Historical District. The hotel is close to trendy Georgetown and Metro subways, which will zip guests to memorials, monuments, the White House, art galleries, museums, the National Zoo and government buildings. Also close to the hotel, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts presents free shows daily, featuring French folk dancers, jazz quintets, children's choirs and storytellers. What's more, outdoor lovers will find close to the hotel two major health clubs and the 1,800- acre Rock Creek Park, which features hiking, running, biking and horseback-riding trails, plenty of green space and tennis courts. Golfers can go three miles from the hotel to Hains Point, an 18-hole course on the Potomac's banks. The George Washington also is six and 25 miles respectively from Reagan National and Dulles International airports.
Cruising down the hotel's residential street, travelers could easily miss the nine-story former apartment building thanks to its small sign and side entrance. Once at the Washington hotel, they'll discover the city's vast collection of fine-dining establishments includes the hotel's amber- hued Nectar, which specializes in "progressive" American cuisine, such as Pheasant with Morels, Veal Cheeks with Butternut Squash, Puree Tempura Soft-shell Crabs and Seared Scallops. Even the persnickety Washington Post called Nectar, which opened in 2003, "the right restaurant at the right time."
